Lexie Janson is back with a new episode on the FuturePlay Youtube channel. She answers some questions surrounding Machina Sports, such as: What is it? How do you pronounce it? What is driving its growing popularity, and finally, athlete safety. Here are some interview highlights.
Machina Sports: What is it?
As covered in our earlier article, “Machina Sports: A Deep Dive,” Lexie reiterates that Machina Sports are those that “fuse both Human Athleticism with Technology.” She continues by highlighting popular Machina Sports such as “FPV Drone Racing, JetPacks, AR technology, and more.” As Lexie describes, for the most part, Machina Sport athletes are in it for the “love of the sport, rather than anything else,” as most Machina Sports remain niche without mainstream popularity and adoption. We at FuturePlay News wish to change this by shining a light on these engaging and exhilarating sports.
What’s Driving Machina Sports Widespread Popularity
While advancements in mainstream sports continue, have humans reached our physical limits? Is watching an athlete run 0.01 seconds faster than their competitors as exhilarating as it used to be? Lexie believes this could explain why Machina Sports have grown more popular in recent times, stating, “we continue to watch mainstream sports but more so due to the popularity of the athletes rather than the actual sporting experience.” She continues with our historical fascination with “Sci-Fi and Technology” and pushing the boundaries of what is possible as closing reasons for the engagement seen in Machina Sports.
We at FuturePlay News couldn’t agree more; we believe the range of emotions when watching Machina Sports varies from those of traditional mainstream sports. Whether you’re watching two bipedal humanoids take part in a fight or a JetPack taking off at a near vertical launch, our emotions tend to lean on curiosity , fascination or even humour. Whereas watching your favourite football team leads to higher levels of stress, excitement or even anguish.
Simple Ways to Get Involved
To get more involved in Machina Sports, the advice is simple: “start slow, visit social media, forum sites such as ‘reddit,’ find those sports that interest you the most and go down the rabbit hole; the chances are if you ask the right questions like ‘How do I get involved? How can I do this or that?’ the people you find there will be more than willing to help you out, as without a doubt, Machina Sports are only fun when multiple people are getting involved.”
Are Machina Sports Dangerous?
The founding teams behind some of the biggest and most successful Machina Sports are heavily invested in safety, as consistent accidents would only prevent adoption. As Lexie states, “the engineering team behind flying cars is making sure that everything is absolutely safe and according to law.” But this isn’t just the case for the Airspeeder team; “each sport will have a dedicated team to ensure the athlete’s safety.” Of course, accidents can happen, but now more than ever, athletes themselves are responsible for their safety by following strict protocols and rules.
Who is FuturePlay, and what do they have to do with Machina Sports?
In her closing thoughts, Lexie reiterates the importance of ‘identity’ when it comes to sports breaking through and reaching mainstream adoption. Would cliff diving or snowboarding have made it on their own, or did the power of “extreme sports” branding assist them in reaching their full potential? Could the same be said for the teams behind various ‘esports’ events and leagues?
